I was pleasantly surprised to see the "crap sandwich" voted down. But apparently thanks should go to Pelosi because her speech before the vote caused some to change their mind and withdraw support. I make no claim to knowing anything about economics but I do know that if allowed the market will adjust itself. At the same time should the employees of these banks be subject to what is happening due to the greed of their bosses? That is the question I ask occasionally. As for the bill I was disappointed at one point in a Patriot today. Mr. Ryan voted for this bill after working to get protections for the taxpayer put in. However after some thought I actually applaud him. Unlike many who voted against this bill he was willing to stand up for something he thought was the right thing to do at this time. I say that because we all know darn well that many of those no votes were to protect political hides in an election year. Here's the statement he released after the vote: “It is with deep disappointment and a heavy heart to have witnessed Congress’ failure to address the grave financial challenges we face as a nation. With an election looming, my colleagues in Congress thought first and foremost of their own jobs at the expense of the jobs of those they serve. I could not and did not accept last week’s proposal by the Bush Administration – an Administration that totally mishandled this situation. But instead of pointing fingers and standing idly by – as would have been the politically expedient thing to do – I worked to secure concrete protections for the taxpayer.
“Today’s vote was about stopping the Wall Street crisis from creating a banking crisis in our communities. The Bush Administration’s proposal was unacceptable, and the American people demanded an alternative solution be brought to the table. I joined my colleagues in putting forth an alternative economic rescue proposal and secured these taxpayer-protections in the final bipartisan agreement. I fought to make sure that once these troubled institutions start making profits, the taxpayers benefit first and foremost. I fought to make sure Wall Street executives don’t profit personally as a result of their irresponsible decisions. I wrote the provision that ensures that Wall Street shares in the cost of their own recovery.
“I supported this bill in order to stabilize our economy and to preserve American jobs. It is about Main Street – that Wall Street’s crisis doesn’t become Main Street’s crisis. It is about protecting working families’ access to credit – so students can secure college loans, farmers can buy feed, seniors can secure their retirement, and businesses can pay their employees.
“I am outraged that we find ourselves in this situation, and I have grave concerns for the state of our economy. In light of the political expediency of my colleagues and the horrendous failures of the Bush Administration, we will have to roll up our sleeves and go back to the drawing board to enact a meaningful solution to our financial crisis.”Sometimes being a Patriot means taking a risk and positions that are unpopular. I'm with you; I'd rather have someone who does unpopular things out of his own convictions than the right thing to peddle himself to conservatives. What matter most in a leader are honesty, approachability, and commitment.

Seems like every excuse I read for the bailout contains the phrase,"...so that people can borrow again." Is not too much borrowing the cause of this mess? ( I'm guilty too)

The examples cited by Rep. Ryan are typical everyday occurences in a credit economy. I know I wouldn't be able to pay for school without it (even if I am guilty of relying on student loans too much).
The cause of this mess isn't "too much borrowing" it's the type of borrowing offered. It's offering mortgages and sub-prime loans to people without making sure they understand the terms. It's people not taking the time to read the fine print which would point out that it's not as easy as it looks. It's the loose qualifiers that gave loans and credit advances to people who shouldn't have gotten them. It's the whole HUD situation used by Bush to score political points as pointed out by Kenny.
It was corporate and political GREED that caused this mess.
A blog I frequent pointed out what else had a major role in this mess -
Hyperenforcement of the CRA by Clinton and the Democrats. (Someone needs to point this one out to Pelosi and Reid.)

Surprise surprise the conservative House Republicans (or is it Republicans in general) are being blamed for this "crap sandwich" going down in flames. www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,430021,00.html Now don't you think they would have learned that you can't rush a bill on this? Nope apparently they want to schedule a vote on something Thursday already. I'm thinking something does need to be done but let's take the time to do it right. I'm also thinking Paulson needs to resign and the negotiating committee needs to change since the current group of dimwits brings too much politicalization to the table. Perhaps the one candidate who actually knew anything about the economy should be consulted in dealing with this situation- Romney. And as much as I can't stand how Bush has handled this he needs to get a backbone on this issue. And oh yeah instead of just screaming "crisis" (like that term isn't overused) perhaps actually explaining why this is a serious challenge America is facing.

Dave Ramsey has another plan to get the economy back on track quickly that calls for little new debt but it will be hard to do with a Democratic congress. For those of you not familiar with Dave Ramsey he is a financial geru who helps people get out of debt on their own by a simple but workable plan. He has a daily radio show on many talk radio stations. See his plan and also on his website he has a way you can send the plan to your congressman easily. Dave was just on Fox News and said Mike Huckabee has a simple plan too. www.daveramsey.com/media/pdf/the_common_sense_fix.pdf

Apparently instead of working on a new plan "incentives" are being added to the crap sandwich. The new incentive-laden plan is being voted on in the Senate first and then the House later this week. www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20081001/GPG0101/810010674/1978"I want to reassure the American people that we intend to pass this legislation," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said. Doesn't Mitch realize most Americans are opposed to the crap sandwich of a bill!!!

But but it's for the children! Just waiting for a politician to use that line for this.
The sad fact is other industries are lining up for a piece of the bailout action.
Very disgusting watching the capitalism principles of this fine nation being flushed down the toilet.
Excuse me but didn't the market rebound with a +458 yesterday??

We hate children? That's why Democrats cut their kids to shreds in the womb. Beat them, burn them, ignore them, refuse to educate them, all for the sake of being able to go on welfare. And we Conservatives hate the children.
It is also interesting that the the Democrat party showed how racist it still is during the DNC primaries. Yet, they want to brainwash minorities into believing that Conservatives are the racists. How ironic it all is. Are people so blind to smooze talk? It would seem so.
Hey, where did that George guy go off to?
