Fred Thompson had to have known he was giving his final campaign speech when he optimistically told us all to "Stand Strong". But we all knew something was wrong when the FredFile was silent. I think he delayed in announcing a decision because he wanted the Fred Fervor/"Fredmentum" to die down a little. The Fred Thompson method is not the media method. The media wants immediate satisfaction: are you quitting or aren't you? His spokespeople said he was going to announce in his own time.
This is really interesting to me. I know he wouldn't have quit completely after SC with a sick mother if he had won the state. He would've just shared his attention. In fact, I remember reading (after Fred quit) the account one of his top campaign people gave. The person wanted Fred to imply in his video message that the campaign needed more money (presumably to get through Florida). And, if you can remember the messages by the red pickup at the top of Fred08, the new fundraising message of "Get us into Florida!" was dropped before SC voted. Fred didn't want to get people's hopes up more than they already were and rejected his friend's proposal.
This is what is really exasperating: Who devised the primary system? Why would a win in SC symbolize being the most conservative for your campaign strategy & candidate's image? (Cross-voting is not taken into account!) It'd be better if the GOP kept every state's results confidential until every state had voted! Then the media couldn't use the "momentum" ploy. That's the way to deal with that problem!
