Yeah, I heard about that one...I remember hearing in a law class I took that you shot a burglar entering your house, you had to make sure a burglar had to fall inside the window to be safe. But this guy was allowed to be a good neighbor!

CONGRATULATIONS, FRIENDS,
I alerted all of you earlier today on my home page blog that the U.S. House leadership was in deep backroom maneuvering to pass a convoluted amendment that would make it possible for Congress to kill the E-Verify program next year without doing anything -- and without being accountable for directly doing so.
We needed immediate mobilization of America's citizens to let the Members of the House know that the E-Verify program to keep illegal aliens out of jobs is wildly popular -- and that the citizens will pay close attention to anybody who messes with it.
You all are fantastic!
Members of the House Ways & Means and Judiciary Committees, as well as the leadership of both Parties, were hammered with phone calls and faxes all afternoon.
We have just received reassurance from our allies on the Hill that the enemies of E-Verify got the message -- at least for the moment.
Negotiations are supposed to be back on track for re-authorizing E-Verify without any seeds of self-destruction.
(Like many government programs, it has to be re-authorized every few years. If Congress doesn't re-authorize it by November, it will be eliminated, and illegal aliens will have pretty much free run of any job they want in America.)
Leaders of the U.S. House know that they would face a gigantic public backlash if they were to directly and clearly kill the popular E-Verify program, so opponents have been toying with a sneaky amendment that would allow Congress to kill E-Verify next year simply by not taking a certain kind of funding action.
As of this morning, the supporters of illegal foreign workers had worked themselves into bargaining strength to undermine E-Verify for next year. That was a departure from what we had heard from the House Democratic and Republican leadership just days ago -- that they had agreed to pass the Calvert/Shuler bill which is a 10-year re-authorization of E-Verify. The expectation was that it would be brought up next week for a floor vote.
Both Republicans and Democrats were involved in the anti-E-Verify effort.
The E-Verify program is perhaps the most effective way to drive illegal aliens out of the country.
The most pressing need right now is to make E-Verify mandatory for every employer in the country (something the SAVE Act by Rep. Shuler, D-N.C., would do).
But while the federal government stalls, many states and local governments are making E-Verify mandatory for businesses in their jurisdiction. The increasing number of governments doing this has thrown supporters of illegal immigration into a panic. They are involved in a massive campaign involving tens of millions of dollars to stop the SAVE Act from being passed and to cripple E-Verify even as a voluntary program.
NumbersUSA will be constantly vigilant and will oppose any and every attempt to weaken the current E-Verify, while doing all it can to make it mandatory.

For now, we are pulling down our phone and fax action notes. But we will come right back to you the minute we sense any new danger.

On Monday, President Bush announced that his administration is lifting its ban on offshore exploration, saying that we cannot decrease our dependence on foreign oil if we fail to explore our potential domestic supply. That is absolutely something that we ought to do. I spoke on the Senate floor on Tuesday in support this idea and urged members of Congress to take the next step needed to lift the ban and to work together to develop a comprehensive plan to address high energy prices.
Solutions that embrace all ideas – from conservation to increased domestic exploration – are at our fingertips if only members of Congress would put aside their partisan differences. The Congress of the United States is sitting on top of a ham sandwich starving to death. America has within its reach every resource necessary to be self-sufficient when it comes to energy. All we have to do is have the political will and the common sense to make it happen.
In my remarks, I outlined a number of initiatives I believe will provide a balanced approach to America ’s long-term energy needs, including oil and natural gas exploration on the Outer Continental Shelf, nuclear energy, conservation and renewable resources such as solar and wind energy. I called on Republican and Democratic colleagues alike to put their elephants and donkeys in the barn and look at the needs of the American people. I also am working with a bipartisan group of senators led by Senator Chambliss and Senator Kent Conrad, D-N.D., who are committed to working together on legislation to address the nation’s energy crisis. If we leave this year without a comprehensive policy for energy independence, we will have done a disservice to the people of the United States and we will not have fulfilled our Constitutional responsibility.
President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief The Senate passed legislation this week known as PEPFAR, which stands for the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. PEPFAR aims to direct a concerted effort toward addressing HIV/AIDS around the world. In 2003, Congress responded to the President’s request to authorize funds to enact PEPFAR by passing The United States Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Act of 2003, which authorized $15 billion over five years to fight diseases abroad. The 2003 bill provided AIDS treatment to 1.5 million people and supported care for 6.6 million.
In May 2007, President Bush requested Congress reauthorize PEPFAR. On Wednesday, the Senate passed S.2731, the Tom Lantos and Henry J. Hyde United States Global Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Reauthorization Act of 2008, by a vote of 80 to 16 with my support. This legislation reauthorizes PEPFAR and raises the authorized level of funding to $50 billion. The House has passed its own version reauthorizing PEPFAR, but the House Foreign Affairs Committee has said it would accept the Senate version of the bill, which could pass the House as soon as next week.
The new bill aims to double that target number to 3 million people getting drug treatment, to prevent 12 million infections and to care for 12 million patients. I voted in favor of the bill because I am committed to continuing and expanding the success of this program. What’s on Tap?
The Senate will debate an energy bill introduced by Democratic Leader Harry Reid that addresses only speculation in commodities markets.

I volunteered to work on a Republican Congressman's campaign in my area. He's not one of the best in the country but he really isn't too bad and he's a hell of a lot better than the disgruntled ex-Lt. Commander from the Navy who is running against him on the anti-war platform. That neither Eric Massa or his campaign would not answer my questions in 2006 about where they were going to money for his programs really ticked me off. I asked the questions 3 separate occasions and never got the hint of a response. He's just another disgruntled Veteran that has a bone to pick with the military and he's using the Bush administration as the scapegoat. gwtwins, I'd take your candidate over my district's "moderate", Dennis Moore! Yours sounds like he knows what's necessary to keep the economy going, and he doesn't try to expound on all the necessities of international cooperation, etc.! And I am very happy your candidate is interested in keeping jobs in America instead of farming them out to Mexico and elsewhere! I find nothing TERRIBLY BLATANT in his stances, and I think it's a good choice for you to work with him (considering the alternatives).

Dear Friend of the PTC:
By now you have probably heard or read news reports that the Third Circuit Court of Appeals threw out fines levied by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) against CBS and its affiliates for broadcasting Janet Jackson's breast exposure during the 2004 Super Bowl Halftime Show. And I'm sure you find the ruling -- and the Court's justification for it -- as outrageous as I do. Shortly after the ruling was announced, CBS issued a statement saying it hoped the decision "will lead the FCC to return to the policy of restrained indecency enforcement it followed for decades."
By "restrained indecency enforcement," of course, CBS really means "no indecency enforcement" -- since that's the policy the FCC followed for decades.
For years, the FCC was a do-nothing agency when it came to enforcing standards of decency on the broadcast airwaves. And the American people had little recourse but to sit helplessly by as network executives used public property -- the broadcast airwaves -- to push ever more explicit and offensive sex, violence and profanity into their living rooms.
And that arrangement suited the networks perfectly.
In the aftermath of the Super Bowl incident, the FCC was finally forced into action by an outraged public and their representatives in Congress. And, I must hasten to add, by the PTC. You see, most people didn't even know they had the option of complaining to the FCC about indecent television content -- at least not until the PTC made a national issue of the FCC's failure to enforce existing broadcast decency laws.
Just days after the Janet Jackson fiasco, my predecessor and PTC founder, Brent Bozell testified before Congress about the FCC's poor record of indecency enforcement. In fact, that one incident set in motion a chain of events that eventually led to the passage of the Broadcast Decency Enforcement Act, which was eventually signed into law and which finally gave the FCC real authority to impose meaningful fines on broadcasters who violate the law.
But none of this would have happened without the PTC there leading the way.
We've now suffered a major setback in our campaign to win back the public airwaves for our children and our children's children. And if you read some of the news articles about yesterday's decision, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about: Hollywood and its defenders are crowing about this victory in the courts, declaring it "an important advance for preserving creative freedom on the air."
Let's be clear about what's at stake here -- this isn't about preserving creative freedom -- it's about the networks seeking and being granted carte blanche to do what they will with a valuable public resource, our broadcast airwaves.
But this fight is far from over. The Third Circuit Court of Appeals does not have the final say, and we at the PTC are going to continue to fight for commonsense decency and to protect our children's innocence. But we can't do it alone.
